Distillers

Some companies are still selling distillation methods of water purification for the home. They are not as popular as they once were for two major reasons. One is that chemical contaminants with a lower boiling point than water will not be removed. Second, mineral content is reduced to nothing, because minerals have a higher boiling point than water and are left behind in the primary stage. Studies have shown that drinking from a distiller on a regular basis will cause digestive disorders and nutritional deficiencies. Water purification technology has advanced beyond distillation, but the marketers won’t tell you that.

It is used by industries ranging from car washes to film developing; anywhere that “mineral free” is necessary. This is one of the methods of water purification that is too wasteful and too expensive for home use. Plus, on its own, it cannot remove micron particles or chemical contaminants. Manufacturers have taken to adding additional steps to improve the performance, but that really just raised the price.

Pitchers

Portable pitchers are, to a certain extent, advanced water purification technology. They are inexpensive to purchase and some work very well. There is just only so much that they can do. For example, pour through pitchers can remove chlorine, but not other chemicals. Some block lead, which is a good idea for travelling, especially in older cites, but you have to check the performance guides to know for sure. They do not block bacterial cysts, so if you are travelling in an area prone to cryptosporidium or guardia contamination, you need a different option. Pitchers are arguably the least expensive of the methods of water purification, but since they are only effective for short periods of time, they cost more to use.

Multi-media Block and Activated Carbon Filters

The EPA has dubbed activated carbon the “best” water purification technology available today, since chlorine and by-products of chlorine disinfection are removed. Pesticides and other synthetic chemicals are also blocked. Chemicals are left on the surface of the filter. Pure water comes out the other side. Multi-media block filters remove sediments and cysts. They also balance mineral content and pH levels. Multi-media and activated carbon are the best methods of water purification for “point of use”, in other words, in the home. Multi stage systems that include both are truly the advancement in water purification technology that we need, at a cost we can afford.
