“Drugs are a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self-esteem. They’re no good at all.”-Kurt Cobain.
After the era of psychedelia when the greatest rock artists, writers, cartoonists etc. indulged in consuming psychedelic substances like opium, LSD, psilocybin, crack, magic mushrooms, ketamine etc, cannabis and alcohol the drug abuse in aspiring artists and youngsters have increased. While many people say it is more in the successful or more creative people because they are the ones who can afford these drugs while others are of the opinion that it is because they increase their creativity; for commoners people are of the opinion that they do drugs because of a weak willpower, as evident various misconceptions can be seen here.California Center for Psychedelic Therapy is one of the authority sites on this topic.
Aspiring artists or youngsters who look forward to some of the ‘rock stars’ who engaged in drugs, consume them too since it may help them be ‘creative’ or it gives them the sense of belonging and consequently the others who are around them start consuming to because they want to fit in. In some cases, the consumer is troubled or has some sort of mental problems.
Drugs do create masterpieces! But at the same time they do not make one creative, instead, they give the person’s mind a state that is needed to let the creativity out in whatsoever form it might be. Or maybe we can say that drugs give a person the ‘prerequisite’ to create something. Most drugs affect the brain’s “reward circuit,” causing a euphoria and also flood it with a high level of dopamine, a major neurotransmitter leading to motivation or ‘happiness’. A properly functioning reward system motivates people to do things which are necessary for them to thrive a happy life like eating, spending time with loved ones etc. Gushing of dopamine in the brain gives us pleasure but leads to repeated consumption of unhealthy substances like drugs which lead to heightened pleasure. But drugs can activate the receptors up to some extent only, after which the receptors get used to them and thus more of consumption is required and this eventually leads to depression and hence the majority of the artists who suffered drug addiction have lived a shorter life.
A recent study by national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism gives us a broader and far more intuitive insight into why are more successful or in their exact terms best leaders have the most sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies than the general population. David Linden, PhD, a neuroscience professor at Johns Hopkins’ School of Medicine has argued that the traits that make a good CEO- obsession, dedication, risk-taking, strong drive for success are precisely that make an addict!
So, if I want to let my creativity out and want to be successful, I need to consume drugs? The answer is no, the ‘prerequisite’ is within us but we lose it eventually owing to the improper control of our emotions and thoughts, the key lies in being enough happy without the consumption of such substances. I would not want to sound spiritual here to the non-believers but if you lose your emotional balance anyway, which is normal for a mortal being, you can choose meditation as your drug.
‘Prevention is better than cure’ and thus we need to regulate our actions, our friend circles and talk out if there is something which is worrying us enough leading us to consume drugs. If one routinely acts without thinking and just submitting to ones desires and cravings then a situation is reached in which one cannot stop taking drugs even if he or she wants to or more simply, one becomes addicted.
Now, it is not so that getting over drug addiction is not possible but it is not easy either, otherwise some of the well-known stars like Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe, and many great sports players would not have lost their lives and their careers due to reasons like suicides, acute cocaine poisoning, alcoholism etc.
Drug addiction leads to a further addiction to self-destruction. Whether you wish to be an artist or not, whether you are young or old, don’t choose the path of drugs to seek an escape or happiness.
